The new Media Engineering Design Integration (MEDI) program, starting in September 2010, is a unique post-graduate course offered jointly by Centennial’s School of Communications, Media and Design and the School of Engineering, Technology and Applied Science, focused on the development of innovative products and interactive environments that are changing the way we think about media. And amidst a global economic crisis, that could also mean the promise of new ideas, new products and potentially new jobs for the Canadian media industry.

International clothing company chooses college for post-secondary competition

Thanks to the successful track record of its students, Durham College’s Graphic Design program in the School of Media, Art & Design was recently chosen by international clothing company American Essentials, to host an exclusive, in-college packaging design competition.

The company’s Packaging Development Contest was open to third-year students who were asked to create innovative, cost-effective and feasible new packaging for the American Essentials Spa Robe, one of the its best-selling products.

Cambrian College is pleased to announce that Graphic Design program graduate, Jennifer Taback, is the recipient of the 2009 Northern Ontario Regional Student Award from the Association of Registered Graphic Designers of Ontario (RGD Ontario). This award, which is sponsored by Sudbury design agency 50 Carleton & Associates, is presented each year to the top graphic design student from the four Northern Ontario colleges (Cambrian, Canadore, Georgian, Sault). Two other Cambrian College graduates, Johanna Shafley and Melissa Deschenes, received honourable mention in this category.

Centennial College hosted the North American launch of The Global Poverty Project in partnership with Chris Adams, former Chief Vision Officer of Participant Media, producers of Al Gore’s An Inconvenient Truth, and Hugh Jackman, on Friday, Sept. 11 at 11 am at The Danforth Music Hall.  The launch featured the premiere of 1.4 Billion Reasons, a presentation similar to and inspired by An Inconvenient Truth, presented by Hugh Evans, Australian author, humanitarian and founder of The Global Poverty Project. Adams is from film company Participant Productions, founded by well-known Canadian philanthropist and eBay’s first CEO, Jeff Skoll. Participant’s credits include Syriana, with George Clooney and Matt Damon, North Country, with Charlize Theron, and Good Night and Good Luck with George Clooney.

Seneca’s Creative Advertising students are exploring the real world of advertising this week outside of the classroom. An entire class, led by Professor Anthony Kalamut, has travelled to New York to take part in Advertising Week 2009 – North America’s largest gathering of advertising and media leaders. Day one found the students at BBDO Worldwide – the most “Awarded Agency Network in the World” – for a visit and discussion with Creative Director Jack Neary who oversees advertising for several Procter & Gamble brands such as Gillette, Braun and Venus in 50 countries.

Chris Adams, Film, New Media and TV Producer visited The Cerntre for Creative Communications on Sept. 9 – 10, 2009, speaking with students and faculty from The School of Communications, Media and Design. Adams is an internationally recognized new media pioneer, entertainment industry executive and social entrepreneur and co-founded Participant Productions in 2004 with Jeff Skoll, eBay’s first President.

Participant’s first slate of films including Syriana, starring George Clooney and Matt Damon; North Country, starring Charlize Theron; Good Night and Good Luck, starring David Strathairn and George Clooney were nominated for an unprecedented 11 Academy Awards. Chris is also proud to have identified and helped develop former U.S. Vice President Al Gore’s Oscar-winning documentary, An Inconvenient Truth which, along with Gore’s work, participated in his being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

Fanshawe alumnus Julie Atchison, above, is set to take over the channel’s weather desk.

Originally from Peterborough, Atchison is a graduate of Fanshawe’s Broadcast Journalism program. She also completed Fanshawe’s innovative post-graduate diploma in Television News – an intensive program that trains students to handle all aspects of television news coverage, from interviewing and reporting to filming and editing. The program gives graduates more options in terms of working in the media.

Local radio stations in the Rogers Radio Group, owned by Rogers Broadcasting Ltd., have donated an initial $33,000 to Conestoga College Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning, to assist deserving students prepare for careers in radio journalism. Of this initial donation, $8,000 is from 570 News of Kitchener-Waterloo and $25,000 from 680 News of Toronto. The 570 News commitment of $8,000 will continue annually until 2014, while the 680 News commitment will also continue in subsequent years, although the amount of their donation will be determined year-to-year.
